Have found several of these in the house. small, flying, a little blood inside, did a lot of looking but no luck on what it might be

Expert Response

This looks like a Sunflower Seed Maggot fly, a common and widespread fly whose larvae feed in the developing seed heads of aster-family plants like sunflower and possibly coneflower. If you have a bouquet or dried arrangement of these kinds of flowers in the house, that might be where they are coming from unless they're accidentally wandering-in through a window or door. They do not look like a biting fly (nor is the species above a biting pest), and insect "blood" (called hemolymph) is not red, though there might be other reasons why a squished fly may look reddish.

wonderful.  thanks so much and makes perfect sense as we have many sunflowers, aster and cone flowers in our yard and often in the House.  thank you very much
