An almost perfect web cylinder #850155

Asked September 16, 2023, 3:00 PM EDT

I looked up on internet and can't seem to find any spiders that make a cylinder for a web. I'm doubting it's a funnel as funnels start flat and go inward while this is a non-tapering tube that protrudes outward from the leaf. The cylinder has a 0.5" diameter. The images show the web on the underside of two leaves on a coffee plant, outside. With the assumption that this is a spider, can you tell what type of spider this is, and is this type of web structure common?

Expert Response

Hi,

Neat! We think it is a 'Lattice orbweaver'  (Araneus sp.) You can read some further information about them on Bug Guide as well. It looks like the cylinder is used as a shelter but they still spin the typical 'Orb' web.

Thanks for your inquiry and please let us know if you have further questions.

Thanks for getting back to me with this info Emily,

Cheers,
Bill
