Campfire Rose care #850095
Asked September 15, 2023, 8:55 PM EDT
We live in the Turnagain area in west Anchorage. We bought a bare root campfire rose in late May and put it in a pot outside. it did not leaf out and we planned to return it, but finally in August it developed leaves and bloomed. It is still in the pot, blooming and pretty leggy. Would it be better to overwinter it in the pot in a 40 degree garage or should we get it in the ground as soon as possible, or leave it in the pot outside? And should the foliage be cut back or just left alone? Thank you.

Thank you Elizabeth for the question.
At this time, it probably will be better to overwinter the rose in the container in the garage. It would not have enough time to recover from being transplanted into the ground before the winter. Leaving the pot outside is not good since the roots will be above ground with no or limited insulation.
It is better to cut the bush back in the spring. At that time, cut out dead branches and thin some canes if there are a lot. If you want a shorter plant/bush, you can cut back pretty hard to a foot above soil level. Remove flowers (deadhead) to the next set of leaves as they flower.
Hope that helps and please let us know if you have additional questions,
