Bot Fly Larvae found #850026

Asked September 15, 2023, 11:37 AM EDT

I wanted to share that we found a bot fly larvae in our house this week. From looking at pictures online it is of the fontenelle variety. This makes sense because our cats have been catching mice in the area it was found. Should we expect more? Should we destroy the pupae? Is there somewhere else that we should report this?

Thank you so much. Is it also possible for humans to get an infestation? We found the pupae because our 11 month old was trying to eat it. He didn’t but. Yikes.

Yikes indeed! Human botfly infection is very rare in the U.S., and your baby would have to be infected by an adult botfly.

See these links:

I’d continue to check the cats and destroy any larvae, but wouldn’t worry about the baby.

Thanks!

Seriously. I may never recover from seeing my baby with that. Not really but yes it was gross.

Thank you so much for all the resources and help with this.

Have a nice fall.
