identify 2 insects on aspen trees #849860

Asked September 14, 2023, 8:07 AM EDT

Can you identify these two insects. Both were found on aspen trees a few miles northwest of Leadville, Colorado.

The wasp was hovering on aspen bark. The larvae was on sapwood beneath aspen bark.

Are they both wood borers?

Eagle County Colorado

Expert Response

I think the wasp is a Sirex horntail (https://webdoc.agsci.colostate.edu/bspm/arthropodsofcolorado/Sirex-Horntails.pdf).  It is a wood borer.
The caterpillar looks like a carpenterworm.  There are several species that bore in aspens and poplars, this one looks like Prionoxystus robiniae.
