Tree fungus question #849310
Asked September 10, 2023, 11:57 AM EDT
I've been admiring this as it was growing untill my daughter tried to identify it and told me that it might be a parasitic tree fungus. Now I'm worried it may be an indicator of a larger problem. It is growing from the tree. Should I be worried?

Expert Response
Yes, I agree, that is a conk of a fungus, also called the "bleeding conk" . The fungus is Inonotus dryadeus, which is a root disease fungus, and it causes decay of the roots. This is on an Oregon white oak, correct? If this tree is near a house or road you should contact an arborist. The tree may be a hazard due to root decay.
