Hessian fly free dates Fall 2023 #849216

Asked September 09, 2023, 8:28 AM EDT

Small gardener here. Looking for a 1st attempt at planting winter wheat (Nu East Hard), winter rye (Common), and barley (Purple Karma) this fall. Wondering about the Hessian Fly Free Dates and any other tips about ideal planting times. I live in Walkersville, MD, about 5 miles north of Frederick.

Expert Response

You can plant your cover crops any time now through mid-October. The rye can be planted later if needed.

Hessian flies are not a problem for home gardeners in our area.
