We have an old red delicious tree in the front yard (Silverton). Records show the house was built in 1940, it's been in our family since 1960's at which time the tree was already there. Can you put me in touch with any local fruit-tree ID folks? The ripe fruit is not completely red, still has a green background. Maybe it's possible it harkens back to the original Hawkins variety, so possibly some historic value. The taste is definitely red delicious. Ripe in later October. Thanks.

The genetics of apples are so complex that in most cases, the only way to know for certain what variety you have is to have some form of documentation such as a plant label, receipt, letter, or journal entry from the gardener who planted the tree.
