Hello, I have a Norway spruce tree that was planted last November, I have noticed that in late August some needles are turning brown and dying off. Can you help me in identifying the problem? Thank you.

Bob: We've have had hot dry weather in late August and now September. It could be that it needs water. In your first photo, there seems to be brown grass or dry dirt surrounding the tree which suggests dryness. Since it's a realatively new planting, the root system may not be well developed yet so watering it during these hot dry days is important. The brown areas of the branches will not turn green again, so you may want to prune them or let them fall naturally.

There are some pests and diseases that affect Norway spruce trees. Below is link with more information. Given the summer heat, I would give the tree a good watering -- letting the water soak in several inches.
