Asked August 31, 2023, 12:42 PM EDT

my honey crisp apple tree has brown spots inside the flesh of the apple. the outside skin looks ok. i have sprayed about every 3 weeks with bonide fruit tree & plant guard spray. three out of four apples have this problem, are they safe to use ? how do i treat or prevent this from happening next year? i have watered regularly. i plan on trimming the tree back this winter, any advice is welcome. thanks in advance \

Expert Response

This is most likely apple maggots.  The product you are using does list apple maggots.  Why you are getting  some disease even though you are spraying probably has to do with concentration or timing.  Around July 1 is when the maggots appear so every 10 to fourteen days is the recommendation on the container.  Traps can help identify when the flies appear.  We do not recommend that you eat these apples. The following website gives additional information that should be helpful.
