Eriopeltis festucae infestation in Carver, MN (south of arboretum) #847708

Asked August 28, 2023, 8:20 PM EDT

We discovered a rare infestation of a part of our lawn. It is little known, and occurs in manicured lawns managed by a lawn service. It's named Eriopeltis festucae, and you get these tiny cotton ball cocoons that have bugs inside. No one knows how to get rid of them, or how they arrive. U of MN has encountered two infestation in the past, according to Iowa State University: https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/2017/08/cottony-grass-scale-%E2%80%93-interesting-and-rare Also, more info: https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/2017/08/cottony-grass-scale-%E2%80%93-interesting-and-rare We thought you need to know about this. We don't know how to kill these bugs before they spread. See photos

Expert Response

Thank you for the information.
I have requested a reassignment to an insect expert.

Craig,

I am checking in to see if you received an answer to your post. We were unclear if you were reporting or asking for a recommendation on how to treat it.

Because of the rarity of this type of scale in Minnesota you may want to report it to Arrest the Pest at:

https://www.mda.state.mn.us/reportapest

You can also send a specimen to the diagnosis lab at:

https://pdc.umn.edu/submit-sample

They will want to know specifically where you’ve found it.

Thanks Deb. I did report it to ReportAPest with pictures and details, but we no longer have specimens.
