Thin grass in densely shaded area #847478

Asked August 27, 2023, 12:47 PM EDT

Grass is very thin, almost gone in very shady areas. Rest of grass is thick and healthy.

Anoka County Minnesota

Expert Response

It is difficult to grow grass in shade.  Given the very extreme heat that makes grass go dormant and the lack of rain grasses are struggling.  You will want to overseed in the fall or seed in the spring.
Some grasses grow better in shade.  For shady locations, look for seed mixtures specifying shade tolerance. These will contain fescues along with some common and shade-tolerant Kentucky bluegrasses. They may need to be reseeded periodically like your current situation. See the following websites for details.
