I have several very large and old western red cedar trees drying from the top down. Can you tell me why?

We believe it is due to increased summer temperatures combined with drought. There are a number of folks working on the issue, and the consensus definitely points to weather patterns of the past 5 or more years (hotter and drier).
We have been unable to detect a specific pathogen or insect associated with these symptoms, so all the evidence points to weather patterns.
