Aster Yellows disease in Cone flowers #847377
Asked August 26, 2023, 11:57 AM EDT
Hello, I have had a stand of Coneflowers for many years. Just this year I have noted changes in the seed head of many of the flowers. Could this be early Aster Yellows .

Hello,
Coneflowers are susceptible to attack by a disease called aster yellows and a mite, the eriophyid mite. The damage caused to the plant by both seems to be similar. For a definitive diagnosis, submit pictures and a sample to MSU Extension’s Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab at: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/

I did receive the photos but I was unable to determine what was causing the problem. That's why I referred you to the Diagnostic Lab where analysis is carried out to determine the cause.
Perhaps it is a moot point. In both cases the best treatment is to remove the plants. Read more here: https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/aster-yellows#:~:text=of%20aster%20yellows-,No%20treatment%20is%20available%20to%20save%20a%20plant%20infected%20with,feasible%20in%20a%20home%20garden.
