Deformed Asian Pears #847199

Asked August 24, 2023, 7:25 PM EDT

I have two asian pear trees in my yard, about 12 feet apart.  This is their 4th year of fruit, and I have not had this issue before.  One tree has lovely fruit, and quite a lot of it (over 100 pears I would guess).  The other has deformed fruit and very few; maybe a dozen or less.  I saw #751647 where it was concluded the "rust" fungus was a likely culprit.  Do you think the same for my pears, and also, can you tell me what fungicide to use?

Thank you for your question, Derk.  There are no photos of the leaves, where pear rust is observed.   This type of fruit distortion is more often caused by apple scab/pear scab (https://treefruit.wsu.edu/web-article/fungal-diseases/
or by one of several insects whose larva feed and cause this.  https://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/r603301911.html
Are you able to cut a pear open, and send photos so we can ID what's inside?  Thanks!

Thank you for your response.  Yes, the leaves seem to be fine.

We had a bit of an ant infestation around that tree earlier this year.  Could that have caused it as well?

Where you find ants, you typically find aphids, whose honeydew they feed on.  This may be helpful:  https://ipm.ucanr.edu/agriculture/pear/aphids/#:~:text=Aphid%20feeding%20causes%20pear%20foliage,which%20falls%20on%20the%20fruit.
