many leaves are coming off the aspen trees in the Evergreen area #846869
Asked August 22, 2023, 6:33 PM EDT
For the past week the strong wind is blowing off many leaves from the aspen trees in the community I live in. The altitude here if 8,000 ft to 8,400 ft. There's no obvious problem with the trees and the leaves look fine. The tree by the front door is 50+ years old and have never seen this before.

Expert Response
Dear Marge ,
Hi, this is Sue, the Extension Gardener on duty today.
Thank you for contacting the Jeffco Extension Garden Help Desk with your question regarding your Aspen trees that have leaf drop. You may send us a photo of the tree(s) so that we can examine them. Closeup and distance shots would be ideal.
I can tell you that aspen trees are susceptible to stress, and this year has been a stressful year for many plants. The extreme amounts of water and heat has been hard on many plants here in our alititude. When plants are greatly stressed they can drop leaves as a response to the environment.
Other things that cause aspen to drop their leaves tend to leave telltale signs like yellowing leaves, or browning leaves. This handy Plant Talk document will give you more tools to help us help you. One thing I noticed is that due to how aspens are collected commercially, they might only have a 25-year life cycle.

So, if you look at this document and want to contact us again for futher help, you can either email us again or call us at 303.271.6632. Again, photos are always helpful to us.
Hope this helps you a bit!
-sue
