Pine tree choices for central Ohio #846592

Asked August 21, 2023, 11:16 AM EDT

I have an open field I would like to single row plant pine trees in. What would be a good disease resistant choice. Soil is well drained with full sun. Photo of area attached. Regards, Larry

Richland County Ohio

Expert Response

Hello Larry

Thank you for your question.

It seems that you want to create a windbreak. Trees are expensive and need special attention at planting time and for the first couple years, watering could be a challenge.

I don't know what county you are in, but where I live, in Clark County, the Soil and Water Conservation District has an annual tree sale.

Every spring, they sell "Windbreak Bundles"  containing a few different species of evergreen saplings.  These bundles are very inexpensive. (typically 20 each of Scotch Pine, White Pine, Norway Spruce). 2023 price was $40 for all 60 trees)
The link below has the home page for Clark Soil and Water Conservation District.  Even though you may live in a different county, the staff at CSWCD can connect you with the agency closest to you, who may offer a similar program.

The most disease resistant evergreens for central Ohio are Norway Spruce, Eastern Redcedar (Juniper), and Yews (Taxus)

The link below has information on these trees and others.
