Is this normal for a cardinal flower? If not, is there anything I can do?

Expert Response

We're not certain what symptom you are referring to...is it the spent flowers going to seed below the fresh flowers at the top of the bloom stalk? If so, this is perfectly normal, and many plants that produce flowers in a vertical spike like this open the lowest buds first, progressing gradually up to the top, so that by the time upper flowers are open, the lower ones are completely spent and already developing seed if they were pollinated.

Perfect!
The bareness seemed to be in the middle so I was unsure if that was normal, or if it was getting eaten, or had a fungus, or something else. It is my first year with this one.  Thank you!
