Recommendation for trees to be planted in a community park #845875

Asked August 16, 2023, 9:25 AM EDT

I am an HOA board member and we have a small community park that is maintained by the HOA. Do you have any recommendations as to what type of trees (would like 2-3) could be planted here to eventually provide shade for families to enjoy the park..currently gets very hot in the summer limiting use of this outdoor space. While there is a sprinkler system any varieties that are less impacted by really dry summers (until the tree gets established) would be helpful. This area cannot be enjoyed because of the "blazing hot sun" thanks for any recommendations..knowing it may take years for the trees to produce shade.

There are many resources for tree suggestions. Sometimes non-organic shade is needed while trees grow. My local park in Sherwood, on Pinehurst and Sunset, has installed some “sails” to shade a playground. If local, you might want to check them out.
OSU publication EC 1438 on selecting & caring for new trees includes lists of trees by size.
Another thing to do is visit with knowledgeable staff at area nurseries about which trees are available in the market place, either seasonally or to be special ordered at the best time of year for planting.
