Can you please help me? #845872

Asked August 16, 2023, 8:40 AM EDT

I recently discovered a very large nest. I believe it is a bald faced hornet nest. It is located on the outside of a lean to type out building. One side is open. The nest appears to be going under the eve and possibly inside the lean to type out building. I am a widow and allergic to stinging insects. I am very hesitant to spray it because of the size, and not knowing if the nest is inside the building. I called Terminix and set up an appointment to give me an estimate. They never showed up. In the meantime the nest is getting bigger. Now with the hot weather it will grow even more. I have heard the U of M will come remove these nests.(?) Can you please help me or advise me? Thank you.

Expert Response

The good news is the hornets will soon die off and will not reuse the nest.

The University does not remove nests.
I suggest if you can avoid the area until there is a hard freeze the cold will kill the hornets. And they will nest in a new location next year.

Thank you SO much!  That was an option I thought would be possible.  I am worried about if they are inside.  I read the queen will winter and that is concerning to me.  Now I will read all that you sent as I am sure the answer to all my concerns will be addressed there.

Thank you again for your SUPER prompt answer!
