Our homeowners association is scheduled to have boxwoods planted at the entrance to our subdivision this fall. I have read about the quarantine for boxwoods in eastern Michigan counties due to the box tree moth. Should we continue with our plan or find a substitute? What might be an alternative planting similar to a boxwood?
Van Buren County Michigan
Expert Response
It would be worth exploring alternatives. I've included two articles. One covers box tree moth while the other covers boxwood blight. Anyone planting boxwoods should ideally have a monitoring and treatment plan ahead of time. The articles also include some alternatives that might work for the location.
