Dead branches on oak tree #845829
Asked August 15, 2023, 6:41 PM EDT
Hello:
We have an English oak in our backyard and have noticed that there are several dead/dying branches. We are wondering what might be causing the dead branches? About this time last year we removed grass growing under and around the tree and are likely watering the area less now as we replaced the grass with mulch and low water plants. I've attached a few pictures.
Thanks in advance,
Eugene

It is very likely that your tree is experiencing stress from dry conditions as evidenced by the brown leaves. If you have any kind of landscape fabric under the mulch it will be even more difficult for the tree to absorb enough water.
After the wet spring and early summer things have really dried out. Supplemental water is now needed. One of the best ways to water your trees is to use a hose end sprinkler that will mimic rain and let it run for 3-4 hours moving it around the edge of the canopy. The tree will need water at least every two weeks.

Hello Paula:
Thank you so much for the speedy reply. I will get right to work on your recommendations below.
One new question I have is with the increased water I will provide might I expect the dry branch areas to recover?
Thanks again,
Eugene

I believe that is a wait and see answer. In the spring you will have the answer as to whether those branches are living or need to be pruned out. If the tree continues to decline next summer despite routine watering there may be more going on with it than meets the eye and you may want to have it looked at.

Ok thank you.
