I saw this shrub along an alley in a very shaded area. It was quite tall, 4 to 5 feet, and had many branches.

Are you trying to identify the shrub? I am assuming you are talking about the shrub in the front of your photo. I cannot see the taller shrub in the back.
I believe the shrub in the front is false spirea ( sorbaria sorbifolia).
