Cherry tree gummosis #845273

Asked August 11, 2023, 2:31 PM EDT

I contacted farmers market recently. I have two cherry trees affected, one Bing, one Stella. Noticed first on Stella 2-3 years ago. Just planted Bing this spring and now affected. Have one Stella, one montmorency, one Bing not affected...yet. The affected Stella has trunk scarring which I think is from it. I've noticed some frass at times, but not typically. I've tried to treat with a few things over last couple years but not very diligently: neem, copper, (spinosad, pyrethrum, BT just recently). Originally thought it might be fungus but more suspicious it's a borer. Not sure what to do about it and hoping to save the tree but maybe that's misguided. I have more pics if that would help Thank you!

Expert Response

Sorry to take so long to respond but I was at a professional meeting last week. The limb die-back, cankers and gummosis on the young trees I see in your images suggests bacterial canker. It is a major problem throughout Oregon when establishing cherry trees. Here is some more information about this disease: https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/cherry-prunus-spp-bacterial-canker

See if it matches up with your observations.

Thank you very much.  That was what I was afraid of.  Work cut out for me.
