What pest is eating my Lamium maculatum #844878

Asked August 09, 2023, 10:57 AM EDT

I replanted Lamium maculatum in late July and within a week the plants had serious pest damage. Some have hardly any leaves left. I have inspected the plants several times and have yet to see a bug, caterpillar or slug. What kind of pest eats the leaves down completely, and how should I protect the plants for the rest of the summer?

Hi Elizabeth,

That might be slug injury.  They feed at night so you wouldn't see them during the day.  You might try trapping some with a aluminum foil pie pan with about 1/2" of beer in it.  Bury it so the lip is resting on the soil surface.  Let me  know if you catch anything.

Best regards,

Howard
