Aspen tree #844788

Asked August 08, 2023, 4:41 PM EDT

Hi. I live in Westcliffe, CO, elevation 7800. This is an aspen tree we planted 2 years ago. It is growing nicely and seems fine

except this is happening. Any idea what is going on?

Thanks,

Expert Response

Hello Debi,

Thank you for reaching out and for the photo.  The black spots are likely old wounds, Our Douglas County Horticulture Specialist says he would not be concerned about those and that the cracks do not look to be biotic in origin.

It could be damage from water-induced swelling, from transition to mature bark (seems small for that, though), or twisting/torsion from high winds?

Hope that is helpful.

Have a good day!

Thank you so much!  We’ve definitely had high winds!
