Dogwood leaves turning orangish-red too early #844549
Asked August 07, 2023, 1:42 PM EDT
I have a dogwood tree, east of my house, that has many leaves, scattered throughout the tree, on many different branches, that are turning color. It looks like those leaves are dying, and I would like to know the reason.
Is it possible for a local expert to look at the tree?
Thanks

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.
You would need to contact your local extension agent to ask if someone can come look at your tree. I would give you the phone number but I do not know what county you are located.
I can tell from just the pictures that your tree appears to be planted too deep. The trunk flare should be seen above the soil level. Also, stones do not make a good mulch. My advice is to carefully remove the soil from the tree until you uncover the trunk flare. I would also remove most, if not all, the stone mulch. Mulch should not touch the tree bark. This may be why your tree is stressed. I will attach some fact sheets to the bottom of this message. These fact sheets are full of excellent information. Please let us know if you have further questions.
