Linden tree leaf drop #844548

Asked August 07, 2023, 1:30 PM EDT

During the last two weeks or so, while I was out of town, my two Linden trees have lost almost all of their leaves. What is the likely cause?

Madison County Illinois

Expert Response

From your photos, I noticed the dark brown (or black) spots on the yellowed leaves, dark patches on tree branches and it appeared that there were larger oblong spots on the underside of the leaves (not seen on the upper leaf surface).
There are several possibilities: verticillium wilt, linden leaf blotch, and insects (aphids and lacebugs). I am leaning toward the Basswood Lacebug, since the pictures of its damage closely resemble your photos. It could be a branch canker disease, but that is rarely a problem of lindens. I am wondering if the dark oblong spots that I noticed on the underside of the leaves are nymphs of this lacebug.
That is all I can offer from the information that you gave me, sorry.

Bingo!  Please see attached.

Now what should I do about it, given that almost all of the leaves are already gone?

Thanks for your help.

UPWell at this advanced stage a systemic insecticide is probably your best choice. In early stage infestations, horticultural oils are effective.
The recommended systemic insecticides for lacebug control have the active ingredient of either acephate or dinotefuran.
  • Acephate products - Orthene Acephate, Bonide Systemic Insect Control, Acephate 97UP or Lepitect;
  • Dinotefuran products (toxic to bees) - Safari, Transtect, or Zylam.
The Bonide Systemic Insect Control maybe the easiest product to find in local stores. It appears that Ace Hardware and Home Depot stores carry it.
