Rose Rosette #844020

Asked August 03, 2023, 3:30 PM EDT

I cut my roses down after the hailstorms because they were severely damaged. Most are growing back normally, except one plant seems like it could have rose rosette. It has some leaves that look like there are pointy leaves growing out of the stems, it has some very small leaves, and it has a stem at the bottom that is thick and very twisted (photos attached). The plant also has some red leaves, but I want to note that new growth in this variety tends to come in red. The other symptoms are more troubling to me. Is this rose rosette?

Expert Response

Hi Jill,

If you want to get the rose tested for rose rosette, you will need to send a sample to the CSU Plant Diagnostic Lab at the Spur Campus. This disease has not been confirmed in Colorado. I would encourage you to call the lab first to ask what plant material they need and how to send it for diagnosis.

Often the new growth on roses is reddish in color, so that appears to be normal.

The twisted growth also doesn't look concerning. The cane it's coming off of appears to be damaged - perhaps it affected the growth of this shoot?

If you do get the plant tested, please let me know what the lab diagnostics conclude.
