This weed usually stays in the flower beds but this year it has spread into the lawn. What is this and how to remove it from the lawn?

Expert Response

Hi Michael and thanks for your question and picture of spotted spurge. Yes, it's really a pest and hard to eradicate, but you want to get rid of it before it goes to seed if possible. In your flower beds you can more easily hand pull it, although if some roots are left in the ground or it has gone to seed this will not eradicate the problem and you will need to keep at it.

In your lawn, unless you want to pay the local kids to hand pull it, you want to look for a post-emergent herbicide that specifically lists spurge and follow the directions exactly. If you search the internet for "what kills spurge not grass" you can find some specific products listed and then look for them at the nearest garden store.

It is a growing problem and as you can see in the following article, it is very tenacious, prolific and long lasting.

Good luck with eradication of a problem weed!
