what is this bush with yellow/orange berries #843645

Asked August 01, 2023, 11:36 AM EDT

we came across many of these bushes while exploring the area around Miramonte Reservoir. The fruit resembled golden currants but the leaves were wrong. The berries were very ripe and had small black seeds. No thorns so they weren't pyracantha.

Expert Response

Hello Kris,

This is Peraphyllum ramosissimum or commonly referred to as Squaw Apple. This is a common shrub in our area and this year the blooms did not frost allowing a nice crop of fruit. The bears should be pleased as this is a major food source for them.

I am sorry it took me so long to respond. The Ask Extension System can be slow sometimes.
