Callery pear or other? #843183

Asked July 29, 2023, 12:38 PM EDT

Condo association has 5a conservation hill. Only mow 1x in fall now as required by city for sledding hill. 2nd year of no mow till Nov. we have plethora of small bushes/ trees all the same that are v aggressive in growth despite being mowed for years and now 1 x per year. Bc they get bush hogged in fall, no flowers or fruit or mature bark to assess. Trying to meadowscape and increase native pollinators. Don’t know if we should aim to allow a few of these to mature (ie as food source etc for natives) or eradicate thru cut and paint if Callery. Have spent hours trying to Id definitively. No orange hairs on underside of leaves along mid vein. But need to be sure if Callery pear so we can approach city conservation folks and request permission to cut and paint. Lenticels not raised on young stems. .

Just from your pictures it does look like a callery pear but it is hard to make a definitive ID from just a picture. For a positive ID, my suggestion is to bring a branch to a nursery that sells trees and shrubs and see if they can ID it. Another suggestion is to send it to the UConn Plant Diagnostic Lab. You can call<personal data hidden> for instructions on how to send in a sample for identification.
