European Cranefly Control #842969

Asked July 27, 2023, 11:57 PM EDT

Can you tell me if around the first part of Sept is the best time to apply grub control for the European Cranefly. I’ve used beneficial nematodes in the past in the spring and August with marginal results. Also have been using cold pressed Neem oil as a deterrent in the evening every week when hawks are seen. I water deep once a week . Can you recommend any of the least toxic granular control I can use? Is Scott’s Grubex ok to use?

Expert Response

European crane fly has one generation per year. Larvae feed underground, on roots and crowns, from October through May. Older larvae may feed above ground on stems and leaves during the night. Larvae start feeding in late summer (Aug.-Sept.) and feed through winter and spring, causing the most damage in the spring (April and May).  Starlings and other birds are attracted to affected turf and may damage it as they search for larvae.

Research in the PNW has indicated limited efficacy of beneficial nematodes (55% reduction in larvae at best).

If you are looking for granular formulations, some pyrethroid or neonicotinoid-based products are listed in the commercial section of this chapter in the PNW Insect handbook.

Based on your query here I assume you are asking me a question for home use- ScottEx has chlorantraniliprole and has cranefly listed on the label. So it is OK to use this product.
