Can you identify this plant?

Jefferson County Colorado

Expert Response

Dear Janet,

It's not always possible to get a firm ID from a picture, but to me it looks like it might be a variety of stickseed.  Take a look at the following article.
https://www.rockymountainsflora.com/details/White%20Round/Stickseed.htm

For a definitive ID, you may submit a sample of the plant to the Jefferson County Extension Office.  Be sure to include the root system as well.

Best regards,
Cindy

I have another question for you... I struggle to identify grasses. I'm wondering if you can tell what these particular grasses are is... one brome, I'm pretty sure, but which one? Friend or foe? And, the other...a rice grass? Friend or foe?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi Janet,

You're not alone, grasses are tough in person, and even harder in photos! The photo ending in 174215 looks like something in genus Poa, a bluegrass; the second photo looks to me like mountain brome.  To get a good ID and more information, submitting a sample to the Extension office will be very helpful.

Cordially,

John

Thank you for your email! I was hoping for mountain brome or perhaps fringe. Futher checking made me pretty sure that it wasn't cheatgrass or Japanese brome, as some were suggesting. I'll continue to monitor as I work our property. An app I use actually gave me Canadian Bluejoint for the other, which now seems plausible with your assessment. Again, I'll continue to hone my skills, but in the meantime I thank you very much!
