Problems with cucumber plants #842499

Asked July 25, 2023, 11:31 AM EDT

Dear Extension,

I am having problems with growing cucumber. I appreciate your help in identifying the issues.

1. Some leaves are wilting and drying out while other leaves are fine on the same vine.

2. The fruits are misshaped. Fruits are darker at the top. Some fruits are bitter.

3. Yellow and brown spots on the leaves. I have tried daconil and hydrogen peroxide.

Thank you,

Ramesh.

Expert Response

Hi-

1. this could be bacterial wilt disease if leaves are progressively wilting- healthy, green leaves become limp with some recovery at night
2. poor pollination/fertilization results in deformed fruits. Bitterness could be related to water stress, high heat, diseases, and insect pests
3. spots appear to be caused by one or more diseases such as anthracnose and angular leaf spot

Information on these problems can be found in:

Cucumber plants are vulnerable to many diseases and insect pests. Select varieties with maximum disease resistance:

Planting cucumber several times during the growing season can help spread risks and extend the growing season. Growing plants vertically is an excellent way to increase productivity per area and reduce disease risk by improving air circulation around foliage.
