Sunburst Honey Locust Tree problem #842391

Asked July 24, 2023, 4:23 PM EDT

Can you tell me what is wrong with my 15 year old Sunburst Honey Locust tree? It has many dead interior branches along with dead branch tips this year. The canopy is thinner than usual. It has a shallow root system. Thank you! Mary

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

There are various insects and diseases that can affect a honey locust. One of these insects is the honey locust plant bug (Blepharidopterus chlorionis). With this insect yellowing and distortion of the leaves can occur. Fortunately a honey locust can withstand infestation by this insect and no significant harm is done.

Please take a look at the following where other insects and diseases are described that can impact honey locusts. Pay special attention to the symptoms described. After so doing please get back to me with your thoughts and opinions.

It may be that eventually you will need to have an onsite visit and assessment by a licensed, professional arborist. Before going down that road, I would to hear from you regarding the information in the above sites.

Good luck.
