QUESTION OF "THOUSAND CANKERS" DISEASE BLACK WALNUT #842365

Asked July 24, 2023, 2:58 PM EDT

HELLO,

I HAVE A VERY MATURE BLACK WALNUT TREE.  I AM CONCERNED THAT IT MAY HAVE "THOUSAND CANKERS" DISEASE.  IT HAS BLACK SPOTS OOZING DOWN THE TRUNK.  IT HAS A THINNING CROWN AND IS DROPPING YELLOW LEAVES IN JULY.  I UNDERSTAND THAT NO CASES HAVE, AS OF YET, BEEN IDENTIFIED IN RHODE ISLAND, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN CASES AS CLOSE AS NEW YORK.

WORK WILL BE DONE TO PRUNE THIS TREE ON WEDNESDAY,  JULY 24, IN JUST 2 DAYS.  IF THE TREE HAS THE DREADED DISEASE, HOW SHOULD I DISPOSE OF THE TRIMMED WOOD SO AS NOT TO SPREAD THE DISEASE.  THERE ARE SEVERAL BLACK WALNUT TREES ON MY PROPERTY.

SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS.

I AM AT:

401 TOWER HILL ROAD

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI 02852

THANK YOU.

Lisa,

Looks like you do have some ooze but it might be bacterial ooze from the lawn mower damage or possibly another larger borer.  Below is a link to more information on 1000 Canker disease.  In any case you might want to contact your local Extension office URI Mallon Outreach Center, 3 E Alumni Ave, Kingston, RI 02881Hours: Open ⋅ Closes 4 PMPhone: <personal data hidden>

or call a Certified Arborist to check your tree more closely.  Here is a link to find local Arborists:  https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist/findanarborist
