Beatle identification #841721

Asked July 20, 2023, 2:30 PM EDT

We found this dead beatle on our front porch in downtown GJ. Google thinks it’s a scarab/Chinese rose beatle and it should not be here. What’s your take?

Mesa County Colorado

Expert Response

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out! This is our southwestern masked chafer, a common scarab beetle that we see here in the Grand Valley. These too can be pests of lawns but for the most part they are not considered a threat to anything. Adult beetles are pollinators and their larvae are c-shaped and very similar in appearance to the Japanese beetle.  This is luckily not the Japanese beetle,  that we recently detected in the area.
