Honeycrisp dropping branches #841608

Asked July 19, 2023, 9:20 PM EDT

Planted a 5yo tree 13 years ago. Early on it had a bit of black on the bark that an agent told me it was the healthiest tree he had seen... in a summer storm at least 3 years ago an apple loaded branch broke off and we sadly trimmed it flush. This year has seen a major downturn. The south side and center didn't leaf out as fully as the rest of the tree. Then we had another branch, not loaded with apples yet drop off the south side. When trimming that up it was noticed that the base of that branch was almost dry rotted. Now a week ago an apple loaded branch fell off the south east side and the branch between the first fall this year and this one is nearly all brown leaves. We have left the recent fall where it's at since the leaves still seem alive hoping to get some apples this year. What I'm most concerned about is if this is a contagious disease or if it's safe to plant a new tree or two.

Thank you for writing.
This appears to be either black rot canker https://www.ontario.ca/page/black-rot-cankers-showing-apples#:~:text=The%20black%20rot%20fungus%20can,fungus%20to%20infect%20and%20colonize.or anthracnose https://treefruit.wsu.edu/crop-protection/disease-management/apple-anthracnose/

I doubt that the tree can be saved.  I might get closer to the diagnosis with a picture of a not dead leaf.
However, you should call a certified tree professional.

So it sounds like we should be safe to plant new trees as long as we don't prune them until the sick tree is gone?
I'll attach a zoom in on some leaves of the branches that haven't fallen... let me know if you want or need anything else. I'm home tomorrow and can snap anything you need.
Thanks!

Jill,
Thank you for writing back.
I need a close up of about 3 or 4 leaves to look for some spots.
OK! The first picture is leaves from the fallen branch. I saw tiny holes.
The next 2 are from "healthy" branches. I saw a few leaves with holes but more with this half dead end look... the last picture is the black I had mentioned from a few years ago. It hasn't really spread beyond this tho

Thanks again!

Alas, your pictures are too large.  Send two of them to me at <personal data hidden>
