Rose virus #841551

Asked July 19, 2023, 4:18 PM EDT

Hi- recently one of the newer roses to my yard has developed symptoms of a virus. I’ve shared it in the rose community but no one has been able to come up with a definitive diagnosis. I would like to send a sample in to the lab. Can you tell me what steps I need to take to do so?

Expert Response

Hi, Michaela

It looks like rose mosaic virus. Since it is not a disease, it does not spread to other plants, instead it is usually transmitted by infected plants/rootstock.

There is no cure, but you can prune unslightly parts out. It does not need immediate removal unless you do not care for how it looks. But if you do remove and replace, look for certified disease-free roses and check over plants before purchasing.

Here is a link to rose diseases: Rose | Texas Plant Disease Handbook (tamu.edu)

And an AgriLife factsheet on the virus. Click on "View on AgriLife Learn" then you can choose the "Download Now" option at the top that does not require creating an account. It is then immediately emailed to you. Rose Mosaic Virus - Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service (tamu.edu)

If you would like to submit a sample to our Plant Clinic for confirmation, follow the instructions on the website. Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab | Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service (tamu.edu)

Best of Luck!
