California insects in CO? #840214

Asked July 12, 2023, 12:54 AM EDT

Hi, My son and I have been monitoring insects in our community garden as a fun summer project. I’m puzzled by a couple of finds though: the first is a group of what my Insect app identified as California Ladybugs (larger than usual with no spots). Is the I.d. correct? It always makes me concerned when I find insects outside their native range… the second mystery is that the app identified a California Glowworm (Ellychnia Californica ) in our garden… again, what’s it doing here?  I was hoping you could clarify what we’ve really got and whether it’s a problem if they’re not native to CO. I’d just like to learn more about them.

Thanks!

I suspect that the app was developed in California and that what you are seeing are Colorado natives similar enough in appearance to "fool" the app into calling them California species.  Identifying insects to the species level can be difficult, often requiring a microscope and other id tools.
CSU does have an insect identification service (the Plant Diagnostic Clinic), if you would like to follow up on these two specimens.
