Small brown soil-top fungus? In potted plant #839778

Asked July 09, 2023, 3:37 PM EDT

This brown stuff was noticed on the surface of a potted plant’s soil, in an outdoor pot of flowers (black sweet potato vine, hanging lobelia, curry plant) & sedum. Emitted a puff of “smoke” when I watered it, like a puffball mushroom. Is it some kind of mushroom or fungus? Should I remove it? How might it affect the plants? Thanks!

Expert Response

That's kind of cool.
That is indeed a type of hair-looking fungus/slime mold, similar to Stemonitis. It is harmless and can be scraped off.
