What is wrong with my Shrubs? #839745

Asked July 09, 2023, 1:23 PM EDT

Hi, I recently transplanted some Concorde Barberry shrubs in May. At first they seemed to be thriving, but in the last 2 weeks I’ve noticed this shrub is losing its leaves, and there are some white-ish colored spots on a few of the leaves. I don’t have much of a green thumb, so I’m looking for some help. Is this the result of overwatering? Mold? Pests? The shrubs are south facing, so they receive a lot of sunlight. I water them once or twice a week.

Thanks for the question.

Barberry is often infected by a fugus that causes white spots/areas to appear on its leaves. It is called powdery mildew. It is possible that this is what produced these white areas. See:

However I am not fully confident in my assessment. If you really want to get to the bottom of things, you should submit leaf samples to the Plant Disease Clinic of the University of Minnesota. Before submitting anything, first contact them to be sure you are submitting things in an appropriate manner. See:

Good luck. Thanks for using our forum.
