Beatles munching on my crape myrtle #839639

Asked July 08, 2023, 3:32 PM EDT

I just went out to water and noticed lots of these Beatles eating on my crape myrtle. I sprayed with neem oil and started picking them off. My question is, will the neem oil take care of them not returning or do I need to do more. As I am writing this I can see the Beatles starting to come back. This is the first year I have seen so many Beatles on this plant.

Hi Becky,

Thank you for your question.  The beetle that is eating your crepe myrtle is a japanese beetle.  They can be very damaging to shrubs, trees and vegetable crops in the middle of summer.  Among their favored plants are crepe myrtles, roses, grapevines, birch trees and beans.   Neem oil directly sprayed on the beetles can be effective but effects only last a couple of days.  Other methods of control include manually removing and squashing the beetles, planting non-favored host plants and use of insecticides.  Or you may choose to do nothing if the plant is large and seems to be tolerating the damage ok.  The other insect you have pictured is a ladybug larvae.  Lady bugs are beneficial insects that feed on aphids, but not on Japanese beetles.  I list below four references from University sources that give additional information on japanese beetle management, especially use of insecticides.  Remember to carefully follow instructions on the label if you decide to use insecticides.
