Disease on pole beans #837704

Asked June 26, 2023, 6:29 PM EDT

I am growing Fortex pole beans (https://territorialseed.com/products/bean-fortex) and two plants have developed a disease. The newer-growth leaves become bumpy with purplish areas on the top and red/brown veins on the underside. I don't know if it affects the bean pods yet since none have formed. The disease doesn't seem to affect older growth (yet), but it may be spreading from the top to bottom. Do you know what this disease could be?

Expert Response

Hi, thanks for the question.

First take suggests that there may be a phosphorus deficiency.  This may be due to colder than usual temperatures where phosphorus uptake can be an issue or just not present in the soil.  Phosphorus is somewhat mobile in plants so the plant will supply the phosphorous from the older leaves. Anthracnose can also show rust-colored veins.  See link below.

I hope this is helpful.
