Bark eating bugs killing my tree #837062
Asked June 22, 2023, 3:40 PM EDT
We have noticed something stripping bark and seemingly infecting the leaves of our tree. We are unable to identify the tree but within the last four weeks multiple branches have died. We have not determined the insect but have seen very small spheres on several leaves.
What can be done? Will we have to cut down our favorite tree?

Expert Response
This appears to be an elm tree. There are several insects that can do such damage. It is important to identify the problem before a recommendation can be made. The black spots are probably frass/insect poop. Lace bugs can cause that kind of damage. Dutch elm disease is the most deadly. As an alternative you might call an arborist for an onsite inspection of the tree. Compare what you are seeing with the following websites.
