blister beetle #836743

Asked June 20, 2023, 10:33 PM EDT

I just noticed that my baptisia has an infestation of what I believe are blister beetles. They are defoliating my plant at a fairly high rate. I also have several iriis but as of now they haven't attacked them. What can I do to get rid of them? I live in Wright County just west of Buffalo. Thank you Barb O'Brien

It's hard to identify this insect as the photos are fuzzy.  Blister beetle doesn't often affect baptisia, which has few insect predators. The broom moth is one of these, however, and is the most likely suspect for what is eating your baptisia.   Their caterpillars chew on the leaves.  Have you seen any caterpillars?  Check your plants and compare photos with those contained in the attached link.  The following article contains photos and information about how to control this pest.

I’m 99% sure it is not caterpillar damage.  These insects are gray and they fly.

You are right in that this may be a burning blister beetle.  Be careful with them, as they contain a toxin that's harmful to your skin.  An herbicide that targets these beetles (lists them as an insect affected by the product) may be effective to reduce their numbers.   For more information, see https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/blister_beetles_handle_with_care
