Bug ID #836450

Asked June 19, 2023, 3:01 PM EDT

Thousands of these bugs appeared on my fence gate yesterday, next to a blue spruce. Yesterday they were all the same size but now there are smaller ones, too, so apparently they're reproducing. They're already in my garage and standing next to all my doors, so I guess they want in. Any idea what they are? I took one picture next to a dime for scale.

Hi Tamra,

Based on what I can see in the photo, these look like giant conifer aphids, which are common in the spring.  They are usually considered a nuisance and not a threat to the health of the tree.  Hosing them off of trees and neighboring structures with a strong jet of water can be helpful; usually the ladybugs will show up and help with control.

General information about aphids in trees, including some specifics about conifer aphids, can be found in this Extension fact sheet: https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/aphids-on-shade-trees-and-ornamentals-5-511/

If the situation warrants other control, products like insecticidal soaps and oils can provide good control--but they also affect natural enemies of the aphids, so might actually make the problem worse, too.  Check carefully for beneficial insects before applying, and apply strictly according to label instructions should you choose this route.

I hope this is helpful.

Cordially,

John
