Japanese Maple Zone 5 #836306

Asked June 18, 2023, 8:15 PM EDT

Hello. Do you think the First Ghost Upright Japanese Maple would survive in our zone? It would be on the north property line, nestled between a large pine and a juniper. If yes, do you have any tips for a better survival? Image is attached.

Expert Response

Good Afternoon Jeanine,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

It is your choice to grow a zone 5 tree in zone 4. Many factors would affect the survival of the tree. Last winter with the heavy snow cover, the critters did not have enough to eat so they chewed the bark off many trees and shrubs that will not survive.

If you decide to plant the tree it would be very important to use proper planting and maintenance techniques.

Here is a link to the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website about tree care in Minnesota:

If you scroll down, there is a link to seasonal tree care. I would ensure you protect it in the winter. Wood mulch around the trunk, as stated and protect the trunk from critters.

Good Luck!

Maureen, thank you for the information. I may go for it-I am a risk taker!

Regards,

Jeanine
