Bug Identifier #835815

Asked June 15, 2023, 1:57 PM EDT

I found a bug I’ve never seen before in my yard. A free identifier app suggests it is an Asian Longhorn Beetle, but it looks nothing like a beetle. It’s about 2 inches long with big eyes on top of it’s head. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Kent County Michigan

Expert Response

This is a big eyed click beetle. They are soil-dwelling insects that feed on nectar and plants and don't pose a major risk to the garden. The larvae are predators of wood-boring beetles, and if you come across this insect, it is best to leave alone.
